How to grow a real, usable English vocabulary — not by cramming word lists, but by learning words the way they actually stick.

A bigger vocabulary makes you clearer and more confident. But cramming 50 words a day doesn't work — here's what does. LEARN WORDS IN CONTEXT, NOT IN LISTS You remember "delay" from "the train was delayed" far better than from a word list. Meet words in real sentences — in shows, songs, articles — and note how they're used. THE 5-A-DAY HABIT Learn just 5 useful words a day and actually USE each in one sentence out loud. 5 real words beat 50 forgotten ones. That's 150 solid words a month. KEEP A PERSONAL WORD BOOK When you meet a new word, jot down: the word, its meaning in your own words, and one example sentence. Review it weekly. Writing it yourself makes it stick. LEARN WORD FAMILIES One root gives you several words: "success → successful → successfully → succeed." Learn the family, not just one form. USE IT OR LOSE IT • Try each new word in conversation or a message within a day. • Read a little every day — even 10 minutes exposes you to natural word use. • Switch a show's subtitles to English and note repeated words. DON'T CHASE BIG WORDS Clear beats fancy. "Use" is better than "utilise" in everyday speech. Aim to be understood, not to impress. Consistency wins. A few words every day, actually used, quietly builds a strong vocabulary over months.
