A drawing-based trick for blood-relation puzzles in competitive and school aptitude tests, with two solved examples.
Blood-relation questions look confusing in words but become easy the moment you DRAW them.
SYMBOLS TO USE
• Use + for male, - for female.
• Draw a horizontal line for 'married to'.
• Draw a vertical/branch line downward for 'parent of'.
• Put same-generation people on the same row.
EXAMPLE 1: 'Pointing to a photo, Rahul said, "She is the daughter of my grandfather's only son." How is she related to Rahul?'
Grandfather's only son = Rahul's father. His daughter = Rahul's sister.
Answer: Sister.
EXAMPLE 2: 'A is B's brother. C is A's mother. D is C's father. How is B related to D?'
Draw: D (parent) -> C -> and C is mother of A and B. So D is B's grandfather; B is D's grandchild (grandson/granddaughter — gender not given).
Answer: Grandchild.
GOLDEN RULES
1) Never assume gender from a name — use only what's stated.
2) Read the sentence from the END backwards; the final relation is usually the key.
3) 'Only son of my grandfather' almost always means 'my father'.
Practise by re-drawing each puzzle; within a week you'll picture the tree instantly.
