The idea
Active: the subject does the action. Riya wrote the letter.
Passive: the object becomes the focus. The letter was written by Riya.
How to change
Object → subject, use the correct form of be + past participle, and add by + old subject (if needed).
Examples
- He drives the car. → The car is driven by him.
- She is cooking dinner. → Dinner is being cooked by her.
- They built a house. → A house was built by them.
- I have finished the work. → The work has been finished by me.
- The teacher will explain the lesson. → The lesson will be explained by the teacher.
- Someone stole my bag. → My bag was stolen.
- People speak English here. → English is spoken here.
- The chef is making a cake. → A cake is being made by the chef.
- We must follow the rules. → The rules must be followed.
- Did he post the letter? → Was the letter posted by him?
Exam tip: keep the tense the same — only the form of "be" changes.
