No tool or textbook change works until teachers feel ready. The good news: you do not need ‘techy’ teachers to teach computational thinking and AI well. A 4-session starter programme

Session 1 — Experience it (60 min)

Teachers do two unplugged CT activities as learners — the sandwich algorithm and a pattern hunt. They feel the ‘aha’ before they teach it.

Session 2 — Map it to your subjects (45 min)

Each teacher picks one topic they already teach and rewrites it around the four CT moves: decompose, find patterns, abstract, design steps.

Session 3 — AI literacy & safety (60 min)

What AI is (and isn’t), where it shows up in students’ lives, and how to use a safe, school-built AI Tutor rather than open chatbots. Discuss honesty, privacy and bias.

Session 4 — Teach & reflect (ongoing)

How to lead a CT or AI lesson well

Turn any lesson into a CT lesson

Pick a topic you’re already teaching this week. Before the lesson, ask yourself four quick questions: Can students break it into parts? (decomposition) Is there a repeating pattern? Can they write a step-by-step method? (algorithm) What detail can we ignore for now? (abstraction)

Example — long division becomes ‘write the algorithm a younger student could follow’. A history timeline becomes ‘find the pattern in why empires rose and fell’. Five minutes of this per lesson builds the habit without adding a new subject.

  • Let students struggle productively before you step in
  • Ask “how did you get there?” more than “what’s the answer?”

  • Front-load definitions and vocabulary before any doing
  • Treat CT as a separate coding period bolted on
